C.Solar System Configurations
Any solar installation connected to a Lunar Battery must utilize Lunar Maximizers and Lunar Maximizer Hub, and the installation must comply with the guidelines in the Lunar Maximizer and Maximizer Hub Installation Manual. Lunar Maximizers are module-level power electronics designed for DC-to-DC conversion. It is important to note that the Lunar Battery’s DC connections may only be made to Lunar Maximizers and Lunar DC-ESS Units; direct connections to PV modules are strictly prohibited.
The Lunar Maximizer and Maximizer Hub Installation Manual outline compatible PV modules, as well as PV stringing requirements, such as minimum and maximum series string length.
For maximum PV DC power input allowances, see Lunar System Specifications, Lunar Inverter section.
D.Battery to Lunar Maximizer & Maximizer Hub Communication
The Lunar Battery communicates with the Maximizer Hub through Power-line Communication (PLC) over the field-installed PV DC circuit. Additionally, the wireless mesh network among the Lunar Maximizers communicates information with the Lunar Battery via the Maximizer Hub, utilizing the same PLC circuit.
E.Microgrid Interconnect Device (MID)
The Lunar Battery requires installation with a microgrid interconnect device, specifically either the Lunar Bridge or the Lunar Meter Socket Adapter Controller (MSAC) used with the ConnectDER IslanDER meter socket adapter. Further details on these MID components can be found in the Lunar Bridge Installation Manual or the Lunar MSAC Installation Manual.
F. Battery to Lunar Bridge Connections
The Lunar Battery connects to the Lunar Bridge via the following connections:
Low voltage connections:
The cable is a 4-wire configuration, comprising a 13V+ power circuit, a signal ground, and two wires for the CAN Hi and CAN Low communication circuit.
High voltage connections:
The Lunar Battery AC circuit and its overcurrent protection must be installed on the backup side, which is the load side of the relay within the Lunar Bridge. For simplicity, the easiest installation method is usually to place the ESS breaker directly inside the Lunar Bridge. Alternatively, the ESS breaker can be installed in a subpanel that connects to the Lunar Bridge.

C.Maximum Distance between System Components
The following distances between Lunar system subcomponents and between the Lunar system and the home electrical systems are supported. Wire selection must meet local codes and is in some cases also based on the distance of the cable run.
Refer to the table below when planning the install locations of system components.
| Maximum Wire Lengths between System Components | ||
|---|---|---|
| Wiring Distance | Wire Gauge | Maximum Wire Length |
| Inverter to Maximizer Hub | 12AWG-4AWG | 200ft(61m) |
| Inverter to Bridge Communication | Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6a, or 14-22AWG(shielded,twisted oruntwisted) | 95ft(29.5m) |
| Inverter to Bridge AC | 8AWG-4AWG | 95ft(29.5m) |
D.Cooling & Ventilation
The Lunar inverter and DC-ESS Units are air-cooled and must be installed with the clearances specified in Site Requirements, Section B: System Clearances and in a location that meets the ambient temperature guidelines outlined in Site Requirements, Section D: Cooling & Ventilation.
Mounting in direct sunlight is permitted; however, in hotter climates, this may reduce system operating efficiency, peak power (DC & AC), and the product's lifespan. It is recommended to avoid direct sunlight in these climates.
E.Operating Temperature Range
The Lunar Battery is rated for continuous operation in ambient temperatures ranging from –4°F (-20°C) to 122°F (50°C).
$$ (-20^{\circ}\mathbb{C}) $$
$$ 122^{\circ}\mathsf{F},(50^{\circ}\mathsf{C}) $$
For optimum performance:
● In hot climates, install where shaded.
● In cold climates, install where protected from wind
Below 32°F (0°C), the batteries may begin to curtail peak charge power. Below 14°F (-10°C), the batteries may begin to curtail peak discharge power.
$$ 32^{\circ}\mathsf{F},(0^{\circ}\mathsf{C}) $$
$$ 1 4 ^ {\circ} \mathrm {F} (- 1 0 ^ {\circ} \mathrm {C}) $$
Each individual DC-ESS Unit is equipped with a 90 Wt resistance heater, with power output dynamically controlled based on the cell temperature measured from that specific DC-ESS Unit.
Above 113°F (45°C), the inverter and DC-ESS Units may begin to curtail peak power. The inverter will decrease power to 3kW at a component measured temperature of 122°F (50°C).
$$ 113^{\circ}!!\ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ 11^{\circ} $$
$$
122^{\circ}!!\ \ \ \
$$
NOTE: System functions are determined based on internal component temperatures. Therefore duration at a given ambient temperature impacts operation. Sustained ambient temperatures outside of the ‘unrestricted operation’ zone are necessary to curtail system operation. Additionally, sun, wind, or other environmental conditions at a given ambient temperature may alter the system behavior.
NOTE: The Lunar Battery is warrantied for installation in direct sunlight; however, solar radiation increases component temperatures.
F. Placard & Directory Requirements
For systems governed by NEC Articles 705 (Interconnected Electric Power Production Sources), 706 (Energy Storage Systems), and 710 (Stand-Alone Systems), a placard or directory is required. This placard must clearly indicate the location of the disconnecting means for each individual power source. Please note that this placard is not provided by Lunar.
